Contents   A hard drive, 2.8 terabyte leftover data from a project that was shot 10 years ago. In 2008, the author and filmmaker Iris Blauensteiner made her first short movie. Now she sifts through this waste material: outtake scenes, photographs, sound files, e-mails, script passages, discarded ideas. This data was archived and well stored, but time has taken its toll. Old data formats cannot be played anymore because they are no longer compatible with current players. The multitude of read errors and image distortions disallow a comfortable recollection of the past, the pictures and sounds are not what they used to be. Ghostly, eerily magical scenes arise from the digital waste material and read errors, they reach into the visible and audible spectrum. Memories are recycled. They require a different cinematic experience, a new narrative, a different film. „the_other_images“ is an experimental documentary short film. It raises the question how memory and remembering is possible when all the digital storages fail or cannot be accessed, postulating a possible answer in form of recycling and reutilizing the digital archive. "Using mutated, nearly illegible material that is marked by decay, Iris Blauensteiner negotiates the potential of rejected images and the issue of storing digital memories: a desktop movie – (hi)stories of twenty-first-century cinema.“ (Michelle Koch, Diagonale Catalogue, 2018)

Contents   The residents of a Viennese truck-stop and a nearby camping-ground share a common need: Resting and relaxing in between traveling. Be it vacation or because of work, the visitors take their private spaces with them. The everyday rituals performed at the rest stop, tell stories about the personalities and situations of those who make these small spaces their home for the night.

Contents   SWEAT follows the last three days of a friendship between two girls. Marion and Elisa live in a quiet village in the countryside that offers them very little. They roam their rural surroundings, go to parties, watch videos, swim in the lake and fight. Angry about the accustomed, they develop new, unexpected power. And start to act it out. “With a pulsating sound comes an Austrian still life stripped bare: summer holidays, backwoods, boredom. Two girlfriends ponder the future and shoot the breeze. Frustrated by the eternal monotony, they channel their adolescent insecurities into spontaneous outbursts of aggression. Playing to that on a YouTube stream are filmed atrocities of live animal feeding: In both cases, the law of the jungle reigns. In the beautifully photographed vacuum of a clearly staked out village cosmos, Iris Blauensteiner confronts her protagonists with the unavoidable settings of the course on the way to adulthood—and also with the two young women’s long-term separation, the inevitability of which has first become apparent. A coming-of-age portrait between wannabe and gangster attitudes, disco and a cautious quest for identity.“ (Sebastian Höglinger, Diagonale Catalogue, 2014)

Contents   Behind Marlene Dietrich as Lola in the film “The blue angel”, there are surplus figures - extras. Behind the heroine they become dramaturgical invisible. Their bodies just fill the image. The told characters and bodies stand in a strict hierarchy of attention, which renders some visible and some not. In “and one of them singing”, a voice speaks and describes the subjective gaze at one of these extras and shows the enlarged, grainy filmimage of her face - the face of a marginalised filmcharacter.

Contents   She travels through the unknown. She encounters and searches. Dark wood, orange curtains, tatty carpet. In a state of inertia in the middle of nowhere a young woman books a single room in a remote hotel. Encounters unfold in the anonymity of the building and disappear into the impalpable. Olivia holds her head under water, looks inward and continues on. MILCH atmospherically portrays a young woman passing through.

Contents   A young woman emerges from the images. Her Off-Voice tells bits and pieces about the relation to the old Viennese building, she’s living in. What she says is, that her neighbour is an electrician or that she never goes on the third floor. The shown person stays uncertain. Sie splits into different layers (image, voice, sounds, space). Her identity connects to her surroundings. „Yesterday, she ripped a piece of colour off the wall. She was scratching for a long time.

Contents   A young woman moves through the 60ties interieur of a council flat - my grandmothers former apartement. „Suture“ is a film theoretical term meaning that the spectator is „sewed“ into the filmic space. The tearing apart and sewing together of the images causes gaps or empty spots. By filling out these gaps, the spectator becomes part of the film. He/She is „sewed“ into the organism of the flat by stitching together the spacial image-fragments to a new, imaginary space.

Contents   1979 a dissection course was recorded. Twentyfive years later, I found the recordings by chance in a private, old Super 8-movie-collection. Projected on different materials in the actual „now“, the past - preserved on film and in formalin - is cut up and carved - like the medical students from 79’.
